I have been living with type 1 diabetes since 1989. I was five years old.
Back in the 1980s, glucose sensors and insulin pumps did not exist. For many years, I lived with an enormous mental burden and often had to rely on how I felt. After all, you could not expect a five-year-old child to prick her finger constantly throughout the day.
I stayed on multiple daily injections until the first months of 2026, convinced that they gave me more freedom. Then I decided to try the Medtrum TouchCare Nano System. It felt almost like my last hope: I had recently had a negative experience with another insulin pump and I was feeling very discouraged.
My main problem was sleep. For months, I had been unable to sleep peacefully because of nighttime hyperglycaemia.
Since I started using the Medtrum TouchCare Nano System, my life has changed. I can finally sleep again.
But the moment that surprised me most happened a few days ago. I woke up, washed and got dressed, took my dogs outside as I do every morning and, more than an hour after waking up, I suddenly realised that I had not checked my glucose level.
It was something I had always done automatically: first with a glucose meter, then by scanning my sensor and now simply by opening the app on my phone.
That morning, I did not do it.
To me, this is what improving quality of life truly means.
It was not forgetfulness. It was the peace of mind that comes from knowing that someone — or rather, something — was working for me. This is the kind of technology we need.
So, thank you. Because even though difficult days still happen — even to people with perfectly functioning islets of Langerhans — today I had one less thing to think about, instead of the usual 180 extra ones.
Ho il diabete di tipo 1 dal 1989. Avevo cinque anni.
